Resident Spotlight: Evelyn Roberts

Evelyn Roberts thinks of herself as a pleasant person and says that is what her name means (in Celtic). She says her friends would say, “I live up to my name!”

The Stratford Commons Rehabilitation & Health Care Center resident has lived in our Overland Park, Kansas community for two years. She was drawn to our community by her family’s recommendations.

She appreciates that our community is focused on the individual and honoring their preferences. “I enjoy being able to do what I want to do when I want,” Evelyn said. “I don’t have to request to go out with family or go outside, even though the current situation has changed some of those things temporarily.”

At our community, she enjoys coloring and doing word searches. She has her choice of multiple activities every day – from exercise classes and art projects to socializing and games – Evelyn can stay as busy or relaxed as she wants to be. One of her past hobbies was painting in large format on bed sheets.

A Hamburger and Drink Were $0.52.

Before retirement, Evelyn and her husband, Gordon, ran Roberts Big T and Tastee Freeze in Chanute, Kansas. “You could get a hamburger and a drink for $0.52 cents,” she said.

Evelyn and her husband moved to Johnson County to be near family after retirement. Evelyn has three children: her daughter Cindy, who Evelyn said has worked for the same person for 37 years; her son, Mike, who managed a restaurant putting in 80 hours a week; and her son Frank, who has an RV and tours the United States. She says her family is her proudest accomplishment.
